I can't believe I'm even admitting it! I love, love books. I love owning them, holding them in my hands, writing all over them and keeping my favorites. I never thought I'd see the day when I would actually want an electronic reading thingie. This one is the Kindle 2, and it can all but fly you to the moon.
But this is so cool! Download entire books in nothing-flat! Someone tells you about a great book- say no more, download it now!
And yet...I will always love the act of walking through a bookstore on the hunt for something really good.
This will be yet another part of life I'll learn to balance. I'll always love the old-fashioned book. Yet, this cool, sleek new toy is just too yummy to resist. Someday I'll own one. And in the meantime...I'll keep flipping pages.
What about you? Preferences?

I really think I could love it, no more melt the spine glue while laying out. I can't tell you how many books I have falling aprt because of this. I like to reread books, sometimes when you don't want to get into something new it's fun to pick up an old favorite and read the good parts, how many can it hold?
I saw this when it first came out on Oprah. I think they are really quite awesome. Like an i-pod. You can carry all your books around with you in one little gadget. I'm sure there are other great features on there as well. Ithink like subscriptions and such.
My vote is yes.
Oh say it ain't so! How does it smell? Reading a book has to smell like reading book.
I always wondered what those things were. I agree with Penny, the smell of the book is one of the best parts about reading. Does the Kindle 2 come with a smell feature, like new car smell? New book, used book, hardbound book, soft cover...think of all the smell features they could offer.
I want too, Nancy. Really, really bad! All my favorite authors are on there so it will be perfect for traveling. Best of both worlds. Reading books at home and the Kindle on the road. Gotta have both.
Haha! YES! The smell. I love the smell, too. And really, I doubt this little electronic miracle would replace the old-fashioned reading experience for me. Just an added bonus, I think. Supposedly the screen is now really close in appearance to an actual printed page.
As far as how many books it holds, it holds, like, a gazillion. I'll look it up and report back. :-)
Oh hey, I told Jed I wanted one so he did the investigating, true Jed-style and he thinks wait a couple years until they make a better one.
I got a Kindle in December as an anniversary gift and I love, love, love it! I think your picture is the original Kindle because the only thing I don't like about my Kindle is how easy it is to hit the Next/Previous page buttons there on the sides. Kindle 2 has made the buttons smaller.
More LDS Publishers need to get on the bandwagon and create Kindle files of their books. It's so easy to do--I've even done it with both MS Word and pdf files.
I'm sure they will get better with time. The 2 has already changed from the first one- mostly like you said, Karlene, that the buttons are better sized so you're not accidentally turning the page all the time.
True, there's nothing like the smell of a book, or an old bookstore, for that matter- (Karin texted me from Sam Wellers today- so jealous!), but I'd still like the handiness of a Kindle.
I am having the same dilemma! I love love love books...I buy way to many books and go the librabry all the time. I love the feel of books. the smell of books. i love them like friends and have loved reuniting with them on my shelves as I unpack them here in alaska.
I have a poem found in grandpa Campbell's papers that he kept on books. its actually on a recent post on my blog. It's clear at the end if you want to see it. I think this may be a start of why we all love books so much!

Another cousin! Nice to see you, Nicole, and I'm going to check out the poem. I wish he had lived long enough for all of us to remember him!
